*Sings "Top 5" like Drake* Ok y'all. This is serious business. Originally this was an Instagram post but I love to educate the average Jo or Joanne on different aspects of fashion, so I wanted people to be able to refer back to it.
A lot of people thought these costumes were simply hilarious. Like Halloween costume hilarious and that didn't sit well with me. Now, I'm always here for a good joke or two but what I don't like is that most people are misinformed on artistic fashion and won't do the research to educate themselves on what the Met Gala is truly about.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, hence this blog post; however, I'm just here to give the fashion tea. So grab your notebook, a pen, a cup of coffee, and an open mind so we can dig into what I like to call a little Met-ducation.
✖️The Met Gala is the annual fundraising ball for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute and commences the grand opening of the annual fashion exhibition.
✖️Theme/Exhibition: “Rei Kawakubo x Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between (There's always a theme. Guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit.)
✖️AKA “The party of the Year” (Hosted by Ana Wintour: Editor of Vogue, Conde Nast Artistic Director, Met Gala Chairwoman)
✖️Honorary Event Day Chairpersons: Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams
✖️Designer Deets: Rei Kawakubo- Japanese designer who founded Comme des Garçons in 1969. One who thinks outside the box and challenges our beliefs on what defines beauty, identity, and gender. (Long story short, she makes you appreciate why fashion is art.)
Below are my top 5 Met Gala Muses:
Rihanna x Comme des Garçons
Zendaya x Dolce & Gabbana
Janelle Monae x Ralph and Russo
Tracee Ellis Ross x Comme des Garçons
LaLa x Thai Nguyen
(All images above via Google)
BONUS! I couldn't end this post with out recognizing designer Thai Nguyen for his concept behind LaLa's dress. He says, "@lala SLAYED the custom GOWN @ the #metgala #metkawakubo to a COCKTAIL version for the after party by UNBUTTONED the bottom 2 panels!!!"

In addition, Tracee Ellis Ross' team got it right with the theme and executed their concept very well, all the way up to her hair. (See collage below with images from her insta story that night.)
